Chargeback Fees Compared: Stripe, Shopify Payments and Square

By Stanislav Stepanenko · US edition · September 14, 2026

On the published US terms checked September 14, 2026, a manually challenged $100 card dispute leaves $15 in dispute fees at Stripe after a full win, compared with $0 at Shopify Payments and Square. A full loss leaves the $100 principal unrecovered, plus $30 in Stripe dispute fees, $15 at Shopify Payments or $0 in Square dispute-management fees. Original payment processing, goods and labor are separate costs.

Payney compiled three providers' public documentation and calculated the outcomes below. This is a dated fee comparison and a hypothetical model, not a test of real transactions, a merchant survey or a ranking of overall payment services.

Bar chart of the amount left unrecovered after losing a challenged $100 card dispute: $130 at Stripe, $115 at Shopify Payments and $100 at Square.

US chargeback fees by provider

US dollars; standard card-dispute paths, checked September 14, 2026
ProviderFee on receiptAdditional response feeFees returned on a full win
Stripe (manual response)$15.00$15.00$15.00
Shopify Payments$15.00$0.00$15.00
Square$0.00$0.00$0.00

Stripe: the US pricing page lists a $15 received fee and a further $15 for a manual response. Its dispute documentation says the received fee is retained in the US; the countered fee is returned after a win. Smart Disputes has a different price structure and is outside this comparison. Rare network fees and custom contracts are also excluded. See Stripe pricing and its dispute-fee rules.

Shopify Payments: its US country table lists a $15 chargeback fee, returned after a win. The published standard process does not list a separate response fee. This row covers Shopify Payments, not a third-party processor used on a Shopify store. See Shopify's chargeback process and country fee table.

Square: its US help page states that it charges no dispute-management fees for chargebacks. The disputed funds can still be held and lost; zero dispute fees does not mean zero financial exposure. See Square's dispute process.

What remains unrecovered on a $100 disputed payment?

Payney calculation: disputed principal plus dispute fees left unrecovered after resolution
ProviderAccept without challengeChallenge and lose fullyChallenge and win fully
Stripe (manual response)$115.00$130.00$15.00
Shopify Payments$115.00$115.00$0.00
Square$100.00$100.00$0.00

The sale was already captured and the full $100 is disputed. These are final amounts, not temporary balance holds. On a win the principal returns; on a loss it does not. The table excludes the original processing fee, inventory, delivery, tax, platform subscriptions, currency conversion, staff time and financing costs. It therefore does not measure the order's profit or total business loss.

For Stripe, the three figures are $100 + $15; $100 + $15 + $15; and $15 + $15 − $15. For Shopify Payments they are $100 + $15; $100 + $15; and $15 − $15. For Square the dispute-fee component is zero in all three paths.

When does the cost of preparing evidence matter?

Consider an already-open, eligible dispute with a truthful evidentiary basis for a challenge. Suppose preparing the response takes 20 minutes at an assumed $30 per hour: an incremental $10 of staff time. This is an illustrative assumption, not a measured handling-time average.

The model compares challenging with accepting the same open dispute. Let A be the disputed principal, C the additional response fee, W the dispute fees returned on a full win and L the extra labor cost. If p is the probability of a full win, incremental expected value is p × (A + W) − C − L. Break-even is p = (C + L) / (A + W).

Hypothetical break-even full-win probability with $10 extra response labor
Provider$25 disputed$100 disputed$500 disputed
Stripe (manual response)62.50%21.74%4.85%
Shopify Payments25.00%8.70%1.94%
Square40.00%10.00%2.00%

These percentages are mathematical thresholds, not predicted win rates. For example, Shopify's modeled $100 threshold is slightly below Square's because winning also recovers Shopify's already-paid $15 fee; Square had no such fee to recover. That does not make Shopify the cheaper overall provider. Comparing incremental decisions within an existing case is different from comparing services before a sale.

The initial received fee cancels from the accept-versus-challenge comparison except where a win returns it. The model holds other costs constant, assumes only full wins or full losses and ignores cash-hold duration, partial outcomes, any outcome-dependent processing-fee adjustments and wider account effects. Different labor assumptions change the result. Only challenge cases you can substantiate and follow the provider's actual evidence deadline; some disputes cannot be challenged.

Method, scope and downloadable data

Edition: September 14, 2026. Geography: US merchant pricing; currency: USD. The selection covers three named services, not the whole market. We transcribed the listed fees and refund conditions from the primary sources below. Fees are stored as integer cents; calculations use exact fractions and displayed probabilities are rounded to two decimal places. No live customer records or estimated merchant win rates are used.

The formulas for the first outcome table are: accept = A + R; challenge/loss = A + R + C; challenge/win = R + C − W, where R is the received fee. Verify current account terms before applying this dated edition. Updating the page layout does not change its observation date.
